Feeling helpless when things seem out of control? Read this.

help is at handOne of the most heartbreaking states of mind I see in my pet owning clients is that of helplessness. They’re doing the best for their pets, getting them the best medical treatment, even bringing in complementary and energy therapists like myself, yet there are still times when things seem out of control, when an outcome isn’t guarenteed. There are times when we feel that we just don’t know what to do.

That can’t be helped, right?

After all, it’s a rare person that can look on calmly whilst waiting for test results, whilst their pets are in surgery, when their mobility is deteriorating or when there is an unknown illness so they don’t know how to treat it.  So, we just put up with it, right?

Here’s the good news.

We don’t have to put up with feeling helpless.

Helplessness is an emotion, it’s a form of energy and we can consciously change our energy. So, whilst it’s understandable and justifiable to feel that way in certain situations, it doesn’t mean that we have to give in to it.

When we are feeling fearful or helpless to ‘make things better’ we rob ourselves of vital energy, its harder to make sound decisions and it’s harder to be ‘present’ for the pet we love.

The good news is that we have more power over our emotions than most of us realize, we actually have choice in how we feel and respond to different situations. That’s what I show my clients, so they can cope better when stressful situations occur with their pets.

That can be a hard concept to grasp, especially when it comes to matters of the heart, to our beloved pets, and people can get angry when I say that how they feel is THEIR choice because they’re sure that if they had any choice they wouldn’t feel that way but that the circumstances dictate it.

Still, I stand by my belief that we don’t have to be ruled by our emotions – thats why I do the work I do with people, helping them to clear their fears and reactions and the underlying patterns that exacerbate them. They become liberated from the grip of fear and are empowered to stay strong even in challenging situations.

Of course, the stronger and calmer they are, the more that supports their pets healing process. I can never over emphasise how much that helps the pets. When I do energy therpaies for pets, the results are always enhanced when the owner actively works through their emotional reactions to their pets conditions, always.

This is what I want you to know.

It isn’t about being in control of outcomes, there are some otucomes we just can’t control or change, no matter how desperate we are to do so. So, it’s not a case of changing your emotion to change an outcome.

At the end of the day it’s about choosing to feel differently because it’s preferable, it’s more empowering and means you don’t spend your life being thrown around in an emotional storm every time something you don’t want comes along.

So, the bottom line in this –  you can save yourself from feeling helpless by training yourself to think differently and react differently. Intention is a powerful thing and if you have an intention to feel strong and calm no matter what you build a strong foundation. Build on this with practices such as meditation (a great way to stop worries and fears from cluttering up your mind) and EFT tapping* (to eliminate the false beliefs that keep you reacting to siutations rather than consciously responding) and you’re right on track.

I know this because this is the work I do with people and I see them change, so I know you can do it too.

Here’s a quick EFT tapping video to help bring relief if you are overwhelmed by feelings of helplessness.

As ever, feel free to share this post with your friends and don’t be shy about leaving comments. I’d love to hear how you deal with strong emotions and challenging situations.

  1. This video has been so helpful, Ferris!! Thank you for the work that you do!! I feel much calmer after tapping.

    • I really appreciate hearing that Sita and I’m delighted that the tapping has been helpful for you.

  2. Dear Ferris, my beloved chihuahua suffered a stroke 3days ago. There was a slight improvement but not enough. It’s still pretty much a ‘wait and see’ situation. I experienced moments of extreme anguish ranging between hysteria and utter despair and have been tapping for two days. I am much calmer now, using your visualization technique once I had calmed down. Tomorrow will be the fourth day. It is an hour and a half through a mountain pass to the vet hospital tomorrow morning. I will be mentally tapping all the way.

    • Dear Elsie, I hope that it went well for your chihuahua and that you got to the vet ok and they were able to help her. It is good that you are trying the tapping and visualization for yourself, it’s much easier to stay focused and make clear decisions when you are calm. Do you have an update now?

      • Dear Ferris, I collected my chihuahua, Pasha from the vet hospital on Monday. An hour an a half trip – tapping and visualizing the whole way. When I walked in I was greeted with huge smile from the staff. The vet came rushing out, excited , took my hand…and it all happened exactly as I had visualized it. Pasha’s little tail was wagging, she crawled to me, I picked her up, she squeaked at me and licked my chin and face. Thank you. Tapping is the only medium I know of which has worked for me …and this at the grand age of 56 years. I am a dedicated tapper and watch your videos religiously first thing in the morning and last thing at night. I am calm, my Pasha is calm and improving at a tremendous rate, and my other 3 doggies have picked up on the new vibe and are benefitting as well. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. This has been a wonderful Christmas gift for me.

        • Dear Elise, it is heartwarming to hear your update – it is so vivid to me. Well done for holding your vision and doing the tapping. It’s very good news about Pasha.
